Mental Health Support Services
Stanwood-Camano School District supports Mental Health and Student Assistance services being provided by the Northwest Educational Service District 189 at Lincoln Hill High School.
Stanwood-Camano School District knows that appropriate and timely, social, emotional and behavioral support services can be difficult for students and their families to access. We are pleased to be able to offer this help at our schools.
Their services and programs are meant to provide prevention and mental health education, support and treatment to students and families. Due to the nature of NWESD 189’s services, state and federal health care access and confidentiality laws pertaining to substance use and behavioral health apply to their services.
- This means that for students under the age of 13, we require parent/guardian consent for participation in services with either a Student Assistant Professional (SAP) or Mental Health Professional (MHP).
- For students 13 and over, they may elect to participate in services with an SAP or MHP without parental/guardian consent.
- Services and documentation of those services are strictly confidential and cannot be released to parent without the student’s consent.
- The only exceptions are:
- The student (age 13+) or parent/guardian gives permission through a signed release of information;
- If s/he indicates a risk of imminent harm to self and others;
- There is a reason to suspect abuse or neglect of a child or dependent adult;
- There is a court order, directing release of specific information.
NWESD 189 highly encourages students to communicate with their parents, guardians, and caregivers about their participation, so they may understand these services may occur during school hours. However, some students 13 and over may not elect to notify their families of their participation.
NWESD 189 works closely with the students’ schedules, to lessen the impact of any time spent out of class. Many students find these services necessary to their school success and are prioritizing both their behavioral health and academic needs.
If you have questions about these services, we suggest reaching out to your school counselor or administrator. You may also find more information on the NWESD 189 Behavioral Health and Prevention Services website, https://www.nwesd.org/behavior_health/.
