High School and Beyond Plan

Planning for the future of your choice

Every student’s future looks different. The High School and Beyond Plan helps students explore their interests, identify goals, and connect what they learn in school with opportunities after graduation.

Whether students are considering college, apprenticeships, technical training, military service, or employment, their plan helps them identify next steps. Students do not need to have everything figured out. Planning is an ongoing process, with room to explore and change direction.

This work supports our Strategic Plan and our promise that every student is empowered to learn in an inclusive setting and is prepared for the future of their choice.

What is the High School and Beyond Plan?

The High School and Beyond Plan is a Washington state graduation requirement and a personalized planning tool. Beginning in middle school, students work with career guidance specialists, school counselors, and teachers to connect their interests and strengths with educational and career goals.

Each student’s plan includes:

  • Career interests and goals informed by an interest and skills assessment.

  • Educational goals that support their plans after high school.

  • A four-year course plan that aligns with graduation requirements and future goals.

  • A résumé or activity log documenting education, work experience, and community service by the end of 12th grade.

How families can help

You do not need to be a college or career expert to support your student. Start with a conversation:

  • What subjects, activities, or experiences interest you most?

  • What would you like to learn more about?

  • What education or training might help you reach your goals?

  • What is one step you could take now?

Review your student’s plan together and encourage them to ask questions. Contact school staff when you need help understanding options or planning next steps.

Frequently asked questions

Does my student need to choose a career now?

No. The plan helps students explore possibilities and identify next steps. Students can begin with their interests and strengths, even if they are unsure about a specific career.

Can students change their plans?

Yes. Interests and goals can change as students gain experience. Students should discuss changes with their counselor so their course choices continue to support graduation and future opportunities.

Is this only for students planning to attend college?

No. The plan supports a range of futures, including apprenticeships, technical training, military service, employment, and college. The purpose is to help each student prepare for the future of their choice.

Does completing the plan meet every graduation requirement?

No. The High School and Beyond Plan is one part of graduation preparation. Students also need to meet applicable credit and graduation pathway requirements. School counselors can help students understand their individual progress.
